Bromley and Orpington Honey Show 2018

Bromley and Orpington Honey Show 2018

Honey Show
The Bromley and Orpington Honey Show was reasonably well attended and for once, Orpington had more people entering honey into the show than Bromley. I think this reflects the difficult year we have all had with the weather. There were 95 entries this year with Orpington doing well. The trophies will be awarded at our AGM so come along and find out who got what.

Lenham Lecture
The bi-annual lecture afternoon was moved forward in the calendar and changed from a Sunday to a Saturday to see if this is more convenient for folk to attend. Sadly these measures did not improve attendance from any branches in Kent, and your committee would like some feedback as to why people stayed away because we know that we are going to be asked the same question at the next council meeting. It could be that you just think it’s too far, or that the lectures don’t interest you. Let me know via email or bring your comments to the AGM.

AGM – important date change.
We have been very fortunate in the past to hold our meetings at Atomwide on Cray Avenue. Sadly we have had to find a new location for our meetings and the AGM will now be held at Crofton Baptist Church, Crofton Lane, Orpington, BR5 1HD. We have had to change the date of the AGM that was on our programme of events from Weds 14th November to Tuesday 6th November.  Please mark this on your calendar. The meeting is followed by a bring and share supper. We bring a variety of snacks/buffet food so that we can enjoy a chat and have a catch-up with people we haven’t seen for a while. Please think about what you might be able to bring along. Tea and coffee will be available from 7pm with the AGM starting promptly at 7.30pm. This will be followed by our shared buffet.

National Honey Show
This takes place at the Sandown Race Course, Esher, Surrey 26-28 October.
Recent info from the organisers as follows:
A reminder that competitive entry forms for the many wonderful entry classes are due by 9th October. All information is on the website: http://www.honeyshow.co.uk/competitive-classes.php and entry forms at http://www.honeyshow.co.uk/download-schedule.php

There are still spaces on many brilliant workshops in our varied programme https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/nationalhoneyshow

Please do encourage newer beekeepers to come along on especially on the Saturday, when we have a special informal and friendly Beekeeping Taster workshop with Celia and David Rudland. Also a programme of lectures on the Saturday aimed at those in the early years to help new beekeepers understand their bees and better manage their colonies.

Lastly, it’s best to use the postcode KT10 9RT, which is displayed on the front of this year’s Schedule, for finding Sandown Park.  Last year SatNavs sent people round the back of the venue and KT10 9RT postcode leads to Esher High Street, from which you can’t miss the huge Sandown Park frontage.

Apple day at High Elms Country Park
This is another date change to Sunday 21st October. Orpington Beekeepers will have an information stall and offers of help to man it between either 11-1pm or 1-3pm are gratefully accepted. Please contact Roy on gilbert3000 [at] hotmail [dot] co [dot] uk
